In my dreams that night, interrupted by the sound of rain, I revisited the little attic apartment Doug had rented in Cambridge, where I’d stayed with him for a month after graduating from college. I was back in time yet knowing the future, knowing how things would inevitably come to an end for us. And this foreknowledge made me cling to him, even as I had the taste of loss in my mouth.

I woke up the next morning yearning for another meeting. My reasons weren’t admirable: I wanted Doug to forgive me for having led him on so that I might be relieved of guilt. But I had no way of getting in touch with him. We didn’t have cell phones, of course, so my only option was to prowl the neighborhood near the train station, past the pizza joints and cafés with Eritrean refugees, in the hopes of running into him, but chances were I wouldn’t find him. He would probably take off for Florence earlier than originally planned; maybe he’d already left. So I didn’t go look for him.

I went into the bathroom and sat on the toilet to pee. Looking down I saw, in a puddle of water on the floor near my feet, a dozen tiny scorpions, all dead, that had washed in with the rain through the cracked window. There were few creatures that revolted me as much as the scorpion, and the sight of their tan, articulated bodies and tails, all curled and still, sent a series of shudders down my spine.

I stood up from the toilet and leapt over their little bodies. Hopefully, Nathan would dispose of them when he woke up.
